Assistant Key Accounts Manager – Commodities

Our client is a global supply chain solutions company in commodity trading, whose purpose is to exert a positive economic and sustainable influence in its food, beverage, and energy supply chains. They buy, sell, move, and de-risk commodities through a range of services including trade finance, commodities trading, analysis, freight, logistics, and price risk management.

 

They are rolling out the delivery of their expanding portfolio throughout East Africa and the region looking for an intelligently ambitious young Kenyan with commercial acumen who can operate independently but work well in a team, show initiative but also listen to instructions, likes to sell but also know how to prepare properly. The ideal candidate is adaptable, demonstrate initiative and common sense, and works hard and smart.

The role is a Business Development one, working closely with the commercial and financial teams and reporting to a Director based in Nairobi. The candidate will progress to a client-facing commercial team, hopefully, to develop and work on new products.

Tasks & Responsibilities

Summary – the candidate is expected to work with the commercial teams to identify and develop opportunities in regional flows of bagged and bulk products.  How will they do this?

  • By developing new product knowledge through analysis of data and research into regulation.
  • By identifying and mapping the supply chains of these products in the region and beyond (if applicable).
  • By performing market research on trade players and competitor analysis to help us understand who is making money and how.
  • By communicating the above insights effectively to the commercial team.
  • By supporting the commercial team in initiating the business strategy with contact lists, credit papers, and new product proposals.
  • By preparing internal business strategy presentations/business proposals for internal stakeholders supported with robust data and information through the above research.
  • By ensuring that the new business lines are mapped into the dynamic 5 Year Plans that the business has in the region.
  • By preparing presentation material of ongoing business updates for management meetings.
  • By complying with any reasonable instruction issued by your Manager.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in trading/Capital Markets/Freight and logistics industries
  • Bachelors’ degree level or equivalent level of education as a minimum – we’re not too proscriptive about what was studied, but it would be good if you could demonstrate an ability to apply yourself to study.
  • Excellent written and verbal English will be mandatory
  • Preferably some good experience in visualization tools like PowerBI and Powerpoint, and any other tools you think might support your application.
  • Experience in regional import/export trade and shipping terms and an understanding of East Africa’s Impex regulatory structures would be useful but not essential.
  • Someone who can demonstrate initiative, and someone who avoids giving stock answers – someone who demonstrates lateral thought.
  • Someone enthusiastic and genuinely interested in what we do, as well as in other things – well-rounded interests in other non-work topics, and keen interest in conversations are skills that would be valued in a suitable candidate.
