Overview of Position:
The Conservation Manager (CM) is responsible for all aspects of the conservancy, reporting to the CEO . The CM leads the development, management, and implementation of Ol Jogi’s conservation strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversight of biological management of all wildlife within Ol Jogi
Implementation of Ol Jogi’s Conservation Plan
Monitor wildlife populations and conduct assessments to ensure their health and safety
Consult with the Kenya Wildlife Service to ensure that wildlife is managed in a sustainable manner and within the governing laws of Kenya
Ensuring Ol Jogi’s relevance from a conservation perspective by remaining up to date with conservation developments and through participation on appropriate groups and associations
Work towards a contiguous rhino conservation area within Laikipia and ensuring that Ol Jogi is a relevant partner in this prospect
Oversight of conservation research
Habitat Restoration and Management:
Oversee habitat restoration projects to maintain and enhance the natural ecosystems within the conservancy
Implement sustainable land management practices to mitigate human-wildlife conflict and promote biodiversity
Maintain environmental data pertinent to the conservation at Ol Jogi including rainfall, vegetation and carrying capacity assessments
Oversight of preservation and enhancement of flora within Ol Jogi
Participate with the Ol Jogi invasive species management plans
Livestock
Support the livestock department to ensure that Ol Jogi’s livestock is managed effectively to support our conservation vision and liaise with communities whilst driving a profitable business model
Security
Liaise with security manager concerning safety of wildlife and Ol Jogi’s assets within Ol Jogi and deployment of resources to ensure this
Ensure that OL Jogi remains effective and current from a technological perspective including communications and surveillance
Liaise with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that Ol Jogi is relevant from a security perspective as well as upholding obligations in as far as the KWS, the Kenya Police and the NIS
Liaise with Paramilitary and Intel’ training providers
Liaise with other private land rhino sanctuaries to strategise in as far as Ol Jogi’s developments
Oversight, training and implementation of EarthRanger software, Lora sensor technology and similar/associated systems
Responsible for renewal of gun licenses for security staff
Community Engagement:
Develop and manage community outreach programs
Build relationships with local communities regarding mutually beneficial projects
Eco-Tourism Development:
Collaborate with the tourism team to develop conservation-focused visitor experiences that highlight the conservancy’s unique wildlife and habitats
When possible, present to guests the Conservation projects and strategy. Engage with guestswho can donate towards conservation efforts
Ensure that eco-tourism operations align with conservation objectives and contribute to the financial sustainability of the conservancy
Organisational Management and Financial Responsibility:
Develop and monitor the annual budget, ensuring effective financial management and compliance with donor requirements
Nurture healthy working relations with national and county governments, local communities and conservation stakeholders
Ensure all governance and statutory obligations are fulfilled, including compliance with financial reporting requirements
Ensure compliance with internal policies, procedures, legal requirements, and financial standards
Manage a multidisciplinary team, ensuring staff work plans are implemented and staff are adequately trained and motivated
Oversee the development, implementation, and regular revision of the conservancy’s strategies, controls, procedures, systems, and policies
Fundraising, and Resource Development:
Identify opportunities to enhance and widen donor funding
Serve as the primary point of contact between the conservancy and its donors/partners
Develop and enhance resource mobilisation, including planning and preparing project funding proposals
Ensure timely technical and financial reporting to donors
Conservation, Field Operations, and Land Enhancement:
Support and enhance field logistics, including developing operational capacity, assets, infrastructure, vehicles, equipment, and stores
Flying for conservation (security, patrols, wildlife interventions etc) when required and limited by the budgets in place
Assisting with documentation for co. aircraft where possible
Guest liaison/Marketing
Host Ol Jogi guests particularly for conservation activities
Liaise with Ol Jogi’s Reservations manager and PR reps to keep them informed of Ol Jogi’s conservation developments.
Writing of newsletter articles, web-text, providing photographic images and other forms of media that might promote Ol Jogi’s business or encourage philanthropic investment.
Wildlife Rescue Centre (WRC)
Liaison with the WRC manager concerning welfare of in-situ wildlife and management strategies in line with our release philosophy
Liaison with the WRC manager and the security manager concerning welfare and management of the canine unit
Oversight of veterinary interventions required in consultation with the veterinarian and the Kenya Wildlife Service,
Qualifications:
Minimum of a University degree in Wildlife Conservation, Environmental Science, or a related field
Additional academic training or a degree in a management field would be a strong asset
At least 10 years of experience – including at least five years of field work – leading, developing and managing programmes / large-scale projects in one or more of the abovementioned fields
Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams, as well as familiarity with the Southern Africa region (preferably Kenya)
Strong understanding of current conservation trends and practices
Knowledge of the institutional and legal framework of the environment and conservation in Kenya, as well as relevant policy issues
Competencies and Skills:
Proven leadership and team player skills
Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating strategic plans and policy
Strong skills in project planning, financing, management, implementation, and evaluation
Experience working with government and with donors / government aid agencies
Excellent inter-personal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels, including with local field project staff, local communities, government agencies, the not-for-profit sector, and the scientific community
A pilot’s licence would be an advantage
Excellent oral and written communications skills in English. Swahili would be an advantage
