General Manager – Logistics

Our client is a leading logistics provider in East Africa. 

They are looking for a General Manager. The primary role of the job is to ensure that the business unit in Uganda is customer focused and that clients’ needs are always well taken care of through provision of world class customer service. 

The job- holder will closely work with the Group Directors to support the implementation of group wide management policies and develop strategic plans for service delivery based on short-term and long-term goals. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for client satisfaction and retention based on the delivery of high quality, punctual and budgeted clearing and forwarding services.
  • Supporting the Directors with the development of operational strategies by studying industry best practices, technological and financial opportunities and producing advisory reports.
  • Overseeing day-to-day business operations of Uganda based Clearing & Forwarding operations.
  • Representing the company and the broader Group on all relevant professional and industry bodies such as UFFA, PAU, UCMP etc.
  • Representing the company and the broader Group at industry events, conferences, public and private sector roundtables.
  • Providing leadership at all levels of the organisation.
  • Working coherently with the other subsidiaries Business Development team to support with the targeting and capturing of new sales on the northern corridor.
  • Accomplishing the company’s objectives by establishing plans, budgets, and KPIs. Allocate resources, review progress and make operational corrections as required.
  • Establishing clearing and forwarding operations, procurement, client management and business development functions.
  • Assess company performance and devise plans for improvement.
  • Providing technical support and oversight of clearing and forwarding and related operating policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining quality service by developing and enforcing the company’s SOPs.
  • Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies.
  • To actively promote, champion and input in to the QHSE focus of the Uganda office throughout all business activities and operations whilst ensuring that full cognizance is taken of QHSE in all decisions.
  • Any other job that may be given to the job- holder from time to time e.g. assist with BD Initiatives., insurers, tax authorities and other stakeholders in connection with finance related issues.

Essential Skills and Person Specification

  • A bachelor’s degree in a business-related discipline.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) relevant years’ experience, seven (7) of which must be at a Senior management level.
  • Must have Sound experience in operations within the logistics industry.(Clearing and forwarding)
  • General knowledge of Port, Shipping, CFS and border Operations.
  • Knowledge in customs clearance processes in COMESA region.
  • Strong commercial outlook and good leadership skills.
  • Proficient in MS office especially MS word and MS excel.
  • Knowledge in customs clearance processes in COMESA region.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A strategic and creative thinker.
  • Organised, accurate and detail oriented.
  • Commitment to team-work.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and under pressure
